Gigi was promoted to capo over the Aprile crew in 2000, following Richie Aprile's death. He was well-received by most of his new crew, but Ralph Cifaretto made his life difficult as he had wanted the promotion himself. The stress of putting his children through college and trying to control a resentful Ralphie, combined with constipation following Thanksgiving, induced a fatal heart attack while he was on the toilet.

Jackie, Jr. barely escaped with his life and then hid out in the projects and tried to get Tony to help him, but he refused to do so. Tony knew Jackie had to go, so he gave the order in veiled form to Ralph Cifaretto. Ralph of course had to maintain stability and more importantly, his stature, so he gave Aprile crew soldier Vito Spatafore the orders to kill him.
